When it comes to practicing position play, one school of thought is to practice specific sets of positional shots. When I first learned how to play pool, I used a system called Target Pool, which literally gave me a big target to land the cue ball on, and gave drills for practicing different elements of speed, draw, and follow. You can do the same thing for yourself using napkins, note card, or sticky notes.
The idea for you should be to select a group of shots that you come across frequently in regular games, and then figure out what positions on the table you might want to get to from each shot. At the beginning, try thinking of at least 3 positions involving draw, center, and follow, and then later add in longer and shorter positions with draw, center, follow. Each shot will require you to land the cue ball on the target napkin. Take notes, make some short lists. This way you can keep track of what you are doing.
Now when you begin practicing these positions give yourself a target # of successful attempts, maybe its 3 successes, maybe its 10 successes. Don't move on to the next shot until you make your target # goal. By practicing the same shots and positions repetitively, you ingrain success into your muscle-memory, and your brain become familiar with your choices so you don't agonize quite so much over what to do when you're in a real game.
It is this kind of repetition that will help you learn how to play pool. You will become more consistent with position, and be more prepared under many circumstances. Just playing through a rack of balls might challenge you to get creative in order to find position on the next ball, but until you have a portfolio of familiar shots already under your belt, you will still struggle. So build up your portfolio of shots you are comfortable with, sharpen those weapons through repetition, and then you'll find things will become a lot clearer come game time.

Over the years, I have been introduced to many variations of billiard games. Some games may take some time to complete, while others are over relatively fast. The two most popular games, 8-ball and 9-ball, for example, will cost average players about 10-15 minutes of their time. Some games, such as rotation and cowboy pool, will take a bit longer. But what if you are pressed for time and want to get in a quick "bragging rights" billiard match with a friend? Or maybe you are alone and want to brush up on your shot setups and break speed, and you want something quick and easy.
One of my favorite, quicker billiard games involves a simple 3-ball triangle setup and one or more opponents. A single match with two players should not take any longer than five minutes. If no opponent is available, a quick game of solo 3-ball is a great drill for leaves and anticipating a few shots ahead.
The rules of the game are quite simple. Place three billiard balls in triangle formation on the head spot, and place your cue ball anywhere in the kitchen(behind the scratch line), as if you were breaking for a normal game of 8-ball or 9-ball. Each billiard shot, including the break, counts as one stroke. If a scratch occurs, it is counted as two extra strokes, plus the shot you just made, totaling three. Each player keeps shooting until all three balls have been pocketed. The player with the fewest strokes after each player sinks all three of their balls is the victor.
If you are looking for a billiard game that is simple to understand and not very time-consuming, then 3-ball billiards is the way to go. Make it more interesting by setting up tournaments or making small wagers with your friends. Or incorporate it into other pool games as short bonus rounds. Firstly the Do's
When it comes to pool table care, these are the essential things to do. Keep it brushed regularly to keep the table free from any dust and debris and always brush from the D end to the spot end, especially if you have a directional cloth, ie one with a slight nap to it like the English tournament pool tables. You can vacuum the table as well if you like but use a soft suction setting.
When not in use, cover the table with a cover to stop the cloth colour from fading and to keep dust and debris from settling on the cloth.
To clean the pool balls, wash in fairy liquid or equivalent and dry off with a soft cloth.
If you have leather pocket protectors use saddle soap or other leather cleaner to keep them in good condition.
Use a damp cloth to clean the woodwork or metalwork.
Now the Don'ts
Don't sit on the edge as this may cause the rubber cushion to come away from the rails, producing a dead spot on the cushion.
Don't put your table where strong sunlight can hit it as this will cause the cloth to fade more quickly.
Do not put your drinks on the edge of the table, that's just asking for trouble. In fact don't get food or drink anywhere near it.
Do not put your cigarette on the edge either, it's just asking for it to roll off and burn the cloth. In fact smoking cigarettes around the table generally is not a good idea as the cloth will smell of them before long.
