This is good for polyester based balls. Don't wash them in the dishwasher. Sponge can be used for removing their tough stains but don't scrub them rigorously. History of Billiards

Historical records about the exact genesis place and form of the game of billiards is inaccurate and ambiguous. The word billiard is derived from the French word 'Bille" meaning ball, referring to a game involving ball and stick, and "art" meaning the art of playing the game. However, lawn games t originated from bat and ball games played as early as the 1300 century. Historians are unclear about the reasons for the evolution of these games. Whether it was merely for entertainment or served some social or religious functions in ancient times is still an intriguing debate among historians.

Billiards graduated to indoor games and became popular among aristocrats and commoners in France by the mid 1500's. Billiards a game of subtle physical deliverance, profound concentration and metal agility allowed fair play and equal footage to players of both sexes. By the mid 1600's, the table version similar to today's games appeared. The innovations of the cue, in the 1700's, lead to the disappearance of the mace that was initially used. Billiard - What Exactly Is The Definition Of This Word?

What is Billiard? I mean what is the true definition?

We hear people talk about playing pool or sometimes it is referred to as billiards. I did some research and found that billiards is of course the plural of billiard.

The definition to me has always been a ball deflecting off another and striking another. (target) like a Carom. (Three Cushion Billiards)

I did a search on Ask dot com.

Most of the online dictionaries including Webster's referred to it as the singular of Billiards. The first result on the Ask dot com page defined it as an adjective and stated see also Carom.

Below I provided Wikipedia's definition.

A billiard is a dynamical system where a particle alternates between motion in a straight line and specular reflections with a boundary. When the particle hits the boundary it reflects from it without loss of speed.

This means that if you hit the edge of the one ball with the edge of the cue ball, and then the cue ball travels along the tangent line and strikes the nine ball, you have executed a billiard.

Last night in a BCA Pool League match, I had solids (small number balls) and my opponent had stripes. One of my solids was right behind one of his stripes and that particular striped ball was next to the corner pocket. I hit the edge of my solid ball thin and the cue ball rolled into the stripe, putting it in the pocket and then stopped behind my solid ball.

I made a billiard on his stripe and executed a safety in the same shot. Cool. My opponent failed to hit one of his stripes on the next shot and I took cue ball in hand and ran the rack. Thanks to a billiard and safety shot, I was able to win the game.

Billiard shots will come up quite often if you know what to look for. I wrote this article to help you understand the true meaning of the word billiard. I still think of the above examples as a carom.

Custom Pool Tables

Custom pool tables are, well just about anything you want them to be, as they are customised to your requirements. The latest one I've seen had a glass table top which was a little disconcerting as you can see the floor when playing a shot, however did it look cool or what! The glass had been specially treated so the balls roll instead of skidding and the price was a tad eye watering at ,000 or so. But for the man who has everything, it could be the ideal present for Christmas this year.

And talking of outrageous prices, the latest gadget is a pool table that has a projector system. The projector projects an image onto the specially treated table top that is only revealed when the pool balls roll over the table. The image is revealed in waves as if the ball is rolling in water, really spooky. Inevitably the picture on the demo model was of a scantily clad young lady, but you could have any picture you want, and I can see this being used as a real wow factor in a high class club or nightclub. The price tag for this amazing boy's toy was a staggering 0,000, but 0,000 was for the projecting system. I think I'll wait till the price comes down a bit before I get one though.

So customising your pool table comes at a price, but you don't need to have the expensive toys above to have a customised table, you can just get a cloth with your favorite beer or football club logo on it, there is a company that will do that for you. Or on the steel framed pool tables with formica sides you can have virtually any design painted onto them you want even a family photograph, now that could add some pizzazz to your games room and these customisations are much more reasonably priced from £150 to the cloth and maybe £200 to customize the paint job on a steel framed table. So yes, you too can afford a customised pool table, just don't get too ambitious with the customisations.
