Pool Tables In Bars - Different Size?

An art form in itself, bar pool is a true test of nerves and skill. Between the crowd of people, loud music, and cramped conditions, a pool player must stay focused and flexible.

The seven foot pool table usually found in bars is often a coin operated model. The coin operated seven foot pool tables in bars have oversized white cue balls somewhat larger than the rest of the billiard balls, so that the automatic return function works. This also presents a challenge for all types of shots, especially those shots made off the rail, a jump shot, or a draw shot.

Billiard Balls

Pool tables used to be ten feet long years ago, and antique ten foot pool tables still can be found in old pool halls. The playing field dimensions of a pool table are sanctioned by the Billiard Congress of America (BCA) and are standard throughout the industry. Although professional tournaments are usually played on nine foot tables, the BCA rules permit tournaments to be played on any pool table that is twice as long as it is wide. But, the larger the playing field is on a pool table, the more challenging the pool game.

Almost all pool tables in bars are 7' long by 3.5' wide. These dimensions describe the playing field or area inside the cushions, and do not include the outside parameters. The "standard" size most people have in their homes are 8' x 4' and the "standard tournament" pool tables are 9' x 4.5' (considered "regulation" size). Most pool tables are perfect rectangles, but there are specialty tables made in round and hexagon shapes.

Room size is obviously a major consideration when choosing a pool table, but playing skill is also important. Pool tables measuring 4' x 8' are the norm in homes where space is at a premium. Many casual players prefer the standard eight foot table, even when they have space for a larger table. Serious players prefer a nine foot table, but may have to settle for a smaller table due to room size. There is a compromise; the "oversize eight" foot pool table is 2" wider and 4" longer than an 8 foot table and is chosen when the player wants the largest pool table possible but just don't have enough room for a nine foot pool table.

Then again, some people have become so accustomed to playing on seven foot bar size pool tables, they prefer to have the same size pool table in their home - and just bring the party home!
